Home owner installs Green Roof Paks, designed by Green Roof Blocks, on residential garage roof

PRLog (Press Release)– Jun 28, 2011– St. Louis, MO: Excitement was building early one recent Spring morning as home owners in a beautifully restored historic home on Park Avenue in Lafayette Square awaited the arriv audi al of materials for a green roof for their newly built garage.  The garage, constructed of brick and designed to match the home, was specifically designed and co chrysler nstructed with a flat roof reinforced to bear the weight of Green Paks, provided by Green Roof Blocks of Lake St. Louis, MO.  The arrival of the green roof had been patiently anticipated for two years, after the home owner had secured the necessary construction approval from the Lafayette Square Home Owner's Association and various City of St. Louis government departments.  

A special crane, provided by a local roofing supplier, Roofers Mart Inc., was carefully backed into the narrow alley at the back of the garage and the Green Paks, filled with growth medium, were hoisted onto the garage roof and placed on the special drainage mat, installed over the roof's surface earlier that morning by Kelly Luckett, President of Green Roof Blocks, and his crew. The job required maneuvering the crane carefully around many electrical wires and poles but Roofer's Mart's crane operator and Kelly Luckett's crew deftly hoisted and installed the Green Paks on the roof. Paving stones were installed to form a patio area and a walkway which would allow the home owner access to the rooftop where they wish to plant a vegetable garden in some of the Green Paks.  A ladder was secured into place, allowing the home owner convenient access to the rooftop vegetable garden.  The home owners plan to plant Sedum in the Green Roof Paks that are not dedicated to the vegetable garden.

According to Kelly Luckett, President, Green Roof Blocks, "This is the first green roof we placed in an urban environment, designed specifically for the home owner to plant a vegetable garden. In addition to the benefits that the green roof provides, such as absorbing heat from the sun and eliminating up to 50% of the storm water runoff, the home owner reclaimed otherwise unused space on their garage roof to grow food."   Typically, in urban areas, rain water slides off roofs into gutters and travels paths along streets, into sewer systems and ultimately filters back into drinking water. Water causes soil erosion, rust, and other environmental damage along the journey. PRLog (Press Release)– Jun 19, 2011– THE FIRST version of the Land Rover Freelander was a rip-roaring success. It was among the first of the small SUVs that was not only stylish, but very useful too, showing itself to be one of the more capable vehicles off road.

Freelander II continued very much in the same vein, but ironed out some of the nasty problems that emerged in the first version. The first generation Freelander was about as reliable as an Irish summer and this needed to be sorted. Things have improved greatly with the second version, but lots of factors have conspired against its success. For a start, with the success of the first generation of the Freelander, all of Land Rover's rivals – and lots of brands who wouldn't even be considered rivals – started making vehicles that were similar in flavour.

We h audi ave had Volkswagen making a Tiguan, BMW selling an X3, and the Korean brands of Hyundai and Kia making competent rivals too – not to mention Toyota's ever-clever RAV4.&# rc helicopter and car market place 13;

None of these could match the Freelander's off-road ability though, and Land Rover e dodge ven started fitting better diesel and petrol engines that didn't blow head gaskets like champagne corks. Then we all started caring about emissions. And Land Rover didn't really know how to respond.

Their Range Rover, Discovery, and Freelander models were all thirsty beasts and once we started getting charged for emissions, sales of these dropped off the charts. This year, we have bought 65 per cent fewer Freelanders in Ireland than we did in 2007. But if you think that is bad, sales of the Range Rover have dropped 97 per cent.

Land Rover has had to respond quickly and they have done so with a new version of the Freelander. And it doesn't have four-wheel drive.

By removing the four-wheel-drive system from the Freelander, it saves 75kg of weight, thereby consuming a lot less fuel and producing lower emissions. The result is that this Freelander coughs up just 158g/km of carbon dioxide – an 11 per cent improvement in emissions over the outgoing TD4_e. And that's without any loss in terms of performance.

The resulting drop in emissions means a drop in tax bands, which means a drop in price too. TIt now starts at €29,995, but the test car we were driving is an XE car news version and it costs €32,995. So far so good, right? There are a couple... okay there are many things that annoy this writer about cars.

One is when you jump into a car that isn't a sub-€12,000 city car and it has a plastic steering wheel. I know it is a small thing, but since this is the part that you hold all the time you are in the car, if it feels cheap it blights the experience. And at €32,995, we still hadn't reached the lofty heights of a leather wheel. When we drove this car back in November of last year we noted that this was a great price and in many ways it is. However looking now in the mid-summer of 2011, things have changed a lot. But more on that later.

What is impressive about the Freelander is that it does feel more upmarket than its key rivals. There is a kerbside presence about the Freelander that still isn't matched by any of the €30,000 SUVs. In its present guise it is handsome and isn't bulky enough to prompt environmentalists to start vandalising it.

The 2.2-litre diesel really is excellent. With 150bhp and 420Nm of torque, it out-muscles pretty much all of its rivals at this level – most of which are trying to haul along considerable bulk with a measly 110 or 115bhp. It is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and without the fuss of four-wheel drive, the Freelander moves off quite smartly. There is Stop/Start in this new front-wheel-drive Freelander and it helps to keep emissions down.

You will 1086274749  all be reasonably familiar with Stop/Start at this stage and we have used it in lots of vehicles and are accustomed to the way it operates. However, unless someone in Birmingham forgot to install it in our Freelander, then it wasn't working as regularly as we would have liked. In fact, over the course of our week, I can't recall it operating at all.

Admiral reveals the impact of rising fuel costs on motorists

PRLog (Press Release)– Jun 04, 2011– Admiral has found motorists using their cars less and ignoring problems with their cars due to motoring costs.

Half of UK motorists say they have reduced the amount of driving they do due to the rising cost of fuel, while more than nine out of ten feel ripped off by the current price of petrol and diesel. These are some of the findings of new research by car insurance (http://www.admiral.com) expert Admiral that illustrate how motoring costs are affecting many drivers.

Admiral commissioned YouGov to survey 2,500 drivers as part of the annual Admiral Survey of Motorists. The results reveal the impact fuel prices are having on motorists, with 92% agreeing they feel ri buick pped off by the current cost of fuel.

Sue Longthorn, Admiral managing director said: "With the average cost of a litre of unleaded at £1.36 and diesel at £1.41, our research shows the depth of feeling British motorists have about the high cost of fuel right now. And it seems high fuel costs are actually affecting how much they drive, with 51% saying they've reduced the amount o corsa f driving they do."

Admiral also asked motorists what percentage of the cost of fuel they believe is made up of duty and tax and what percentage of it they think would be a fair amount. On average, they believe 64% of the cost is made up of fuel duty and VAT, however they think a fairer amount would be less than half that at 31%. Actually fuel duty and VAT account for around 60% of the total price of petrol and diesel.

But it isn't just the cost of fuel that's affecting driving habits; other expenses are having an impact too. 18% said they have ignored a fault or problem with their car because of the cost of repairs. While 15% said they have cut back or stopped servicing their car due to costs, and even more worrying, 8% said they have ignored problems with their tyres due to the cost of replacing them.

Sue Longthorn continued: "It's a concern that some motorists are willing to drive around with tyres not in the very best of condition. This could cause more serious problems long term and could even cause them to have an accident."

Despite half of motorists admitting they have reduced the amount of driving they do because of the cost of fuel, they do not expect the rising cost of motoring will result in less traffic. Only 37% said they agreed it would result in fewer vehicles on our roads, compared with 41% who didn't agree with this.
